The Curtin University National Science Week Photo Competition has now closed. The Competition aimed to highlight iconic Western Australian plants and animals in the much-loved habitats of the beach, the bush and the backyard in celebration of the International Year of Biodiversity and National Science Week.
The judging panel was very impressed with the quality of the entries. We are pleased to announce the prize winners as follows:
Category: Beach
Scott McGregor
“Osprey (Pandion haliaetus)”
This large coastal hawk survives on a diet consisting almost entirely of
fish, which it captures by plunging headlong into water - a task made easier
courtesy of waterproof feathers and powerful feet with long claws. Image captured
on the bank of the Swan River, 2010.
Category: Bush
Chris Tate
“Thirsty Work”
Budgerigars take a fleeting drink at a waterhole in the Gascoyne. A beautiful
bird in a desert environment.
Category: Backyard
Heather Thorning
“Hang On”
This little fellow was resting on a strand of grass in the backyard.
Student Winner
Ashley Pot (Year 6)
“Explorative Spider”
I took this photo of a spider in my back yard, and I think this photo is
really cool because I had to use a lens that can pick up very small details to
take a photo of this really small spider.
People's Choice Winner
Magdeline Lum
“Australian Blue-Banded Bee”
This shy native bee wasn't anywhere peculiar. The bee was in my garden, evidence
that biodiversity can start home.
Thank you to all who participated. We look forward to your entries next year!
An exhibition of the winners and finalists will be on show in Curtin's Resources and Chemistry Precinct and Scitech from mid September. More details will be posted as they are confirmed.
National Science Week runs every year and is a week dedicated to exploring the wonders of science. In 2011 it will held from 13- 21 August.
